Why, Why, Why?

I know the Prius is Japanese, but why wasn't this fuel saving technology available decades ago?
I was in Tokyo in 1990, and even then gas was about $2 a liter. I have to wonder why they didn't react to gas prices until we Americans started getting hosed.
I'm not talking about Europe and their tiny clown cars, I'm talking about the world's best auto maker: Japan.
Okay, okay, Mercedes Benz and Porsche are nice cars but I'm talking about cars that most people can actually afford.
Look, we gave the Japanese the mass production technology for automobiles, so as a little thank you, can't they whip up something that runs on water?
I'm disgusted.

Wow! I read today that Toyota is planning a 2009 re-tooled Prius that'll get 100 mpg.
My request was answered!

we have had TWO previous wake up calls about gas and oil - 1973 and 1979

and did nothing..........

Provocative questions dear karen.

Perhaps (and I truly speculate here) one reason is that the Japanese do not drive as much as we do. And since we buy most of their cars and we were willing to buy, in fact demanding bigger and nicer - they complied.

I mean you remember the early Honda Civic in the 70's - right? It was teeny tiny like a toy car. One kid at my high school had one in 1974 or so. Other kids made fun of him for this.

One day - and I did watch this with my own eyes - 4 guys picked up the car and turned it sideways in its parking space.

My long winded point being - give the people what they want has always been the drumbeat of the marketplace.

And now we must struggle to give the people and the planet what it needs.
