Another Colossal Bush Boner

Reuters reports that Verizon Communications Inc.and BellSouth, facing consumer lawsuits seeking massive damages, have issued carefully worded denials of a report that they turned over millions of customers' calling records to a U.S. spy agency.
USA Today reported last week that the National Security Agency has had access to records of billions of domestic calls and collected tens of millions of telephone records from data provided by BellSouth, Verizon and AT&T ..."

Aside from the fact than I and millions of other law abiding Americans resent the government illegally spying on domestic phone calls, the act itself is a testament of Bush's stupidity.

If I am a detective collecting clues about potential terrorist activities, if I overcollect data to examine, I have no time to devote to chasing down SUSPICIOUS characters because I am overwhelmed by sifting through billions of useless clues.

A needle is small, but a haystack has a finite number of hay, so if a needle is in there, it can eventually be located.

While BushCo is fanning out into the investigation of billions upon billions of meaningless phone calls in order to track down trends that may lead to terrorism cells in America, meanwhile terrorists are buying disposable cell phones, doing their business in the blink of an eye, then throwing the phones in the nearest body of water.

What's next, draining every body of water in America to locate suspicious cell phones? Well, when you think of it, it's just as stupid as what's already being done.

But at least it's legal.

You bring up an interesting point.
If I were an Islamic terrorist determined to infiltrate America, I'd go to Mexico and study Spanish until I was as fluent as any poor Mexican who lacks rudimentary education...which is not much Spanish to learn.
Then I'd grow a droopy mustache, don a T-shirt with Selena silkscreened on the front and cross the border at any of the International bridges with the fake ID I purchased from a Mexican forger.
Without any racism implied, we must admit that Mexicans and Arabs share similar coloring and features.
For Bush NOT to have considered fortifying the Mexican borders as a top priority IMMEDIATELY after 9/11 shows how fucking shortsighted and stupid he is.
The National Guard troops Bush deployed to Iraq would have been far better utilized as increased Border Patrol manpower.
Too little, too late.

In Texas one needn't bother with trekking over the desert.
One can either walk across the several bridges that span the Rio Grande, drive across them, or take a leisurely wade through the many shallow spots of the Rio Grande. If I were a Middle Eastern terrorist, I'd walk across the bridge, then stroll over to the nearby Greyhound bus station and select my American destination.

The NYT had a good piece up about number crunching all those phone numbers, it was an OpEd piece..it basically said they aren't smart enough to use it in conjunction with other things to nail down terrorists..I can find the link on my blog if you like, I blogged about it earlier in the week.
Plus, like you said..the damn terrorists use throwaways..

I think I may have read that piece, Dusty.
Besides, anyone can tell by gathering too much useless data, the effort to root out the useful data becomes an exercise in futility.
I doubt it has anything to do with terrorism anyway- The Decider just likes being able to snoop wherever he damn well chooses, laws be damned.

Paranoia is very much a part of a dry drunk's personality disorder.
He needs treatment for his mental illnesses- the ones he hid behind dope and booze all those decades.

Your not the only one saying that lately.
