Class Act

President Obama has purchased a $30,000 ring to give his wife Michelle as a thank you gift on inauguration day.
It's made of rhodium, the world's most expensive metal, and encrusted with diamonds.
While I remain a cynic at heart, I was so happy to read about this gesture made by a man who loves his wife and knows how to demonstrate it with an eternal keepsake like this ring.
Of course the unwashed masses have criticised the purchase, saying the money should have gone to charity and other petty things, but I disagree.
The ring will become a part of American history as a symbol of so many things that are right about the President and his wife and family.
Imagine the example he's setting for all men, Black men in particular. His daughters are growing up in a stable, loving home and will seek out husbands or other mates who meet the standards they were reared in.
The ring reminds me that we have a new president who's obviously loving, well loved and in a passionate relationship.
I think a person who's sexually and emotionally satisfied at home is less likely to go to the office frustrated and angry and take it out on others, like Bush did in his thirst for war.
Who knows, maybe Bush and Laura are still gettin' it on, but it looks to me like their marriage is bland at best. I know we've never read about any romantic gestures Bush has made toward Laura.
With this symbolic ring, Obama has shown us he's taking care of business in his marriage. That bodes well for him taking care of business in the White House, too.

Sheesh, I hope that she doesn't read your blog, but I bet she does. It won't be a surprise now!!!

I love how some people criticize Obama's buying habits but they cheered when Bush took us to war. Crazy, huh.

I'm just thrilled that we're going to have a first couple that actually seem to like each other. And you know he thought long and hard about the gift, too, not just buying the sparkly thing in the display case. They are both truly class acts.

I am with you, Karen. Already reading snotty remarks about the purchase. Sheesh. Get a fucking life, morans....how cool is it to have a Prez, a role model, who demonstrably loves his wife, and how cool is it to think there'll be a lot of schtooping going on, on Pennsylvania Avenue. And the American public isn't the ones getting schtooped.

Good one Zoe.

Its going to be hard for some people to go from a country controlled by haters, to a leader who values love of family, friends, his country and those who don't have a voice in our society.

I wonder what to call the opposite of haters? Not lovers of course. Does anyone have a one word description for the opposite of haters?

It's no one's business how much he spent on the damn ring, you know? The guy loves his wife. Why the fuck shouldn't he show it?

I can't believe you forgot about the six-pack and bottle of pills Chimpy gets for Pickles every Valentine's Day. You all are cold, cold, cold.

That is a big chunk of change for a ring. They have two kids to put through college ~ but they are in a different financial bracket than I am.

Just saw this on the internet:
FACT CHECK: Michelle Obama won't get pricey ring
11 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AP) — Looks like Michelle Obama won't be setting aside her fake pearls in favor of a $30,000 thank you ring from her husband.
London tabloids reported that President-elect Barack Obama was buying a pricey rhodium ring from Italian designer Giovanni Bosco for his wife. But there's no truth to the report, said Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer.
The rumor began overseas and made the rounds of American blogs, including the Drudge Report.
The office of Giovanni Bosco, reached in northern Italy, also said the reports were incorrect.

Oh well. It still sounds like something he'd do.

Apocryphal of the romantic connection that we all see.

She should have a nice ring like this. But she'd probably be okay with a little outfit from J. Crew.

Whether he buys this ring or not...I would have no complaints about how he spends his money...they are one terrific couple.

it is his money and he can do what he wants with it. even tho he aint buying the ring

how about the fact you dont ever see bush even show one iota of affection to those twin twats of his.......

that whole family is one cold and distant one.....

I know this is his money and he can do whatever he wants , but personnally such a lavish gift in the time of economic down turn (crisis) for me would be shocking - even the French president is playing low profile !
But again in America one lieks to show thier money , in France we prefer intellectuals and starving artists to moeny makers .. my opinion reflects this cultural bias
