there will never be another walter cronkite, though we desperately need one these days. rest in peace, walter.

He was a classic.

We can never have another Walter Cronkite because he wouldn't have tolerated three weeks of Michael Jackson coverage or other Arts & Entertainment news to lead the nightly news.

Damn Skippy KZ! He would of been appalled. I will now have to read his memoirs. ;(

my walter story

my walter story

when i started work right out of grad school - at CBS, i worked for "As the World Turns" as a "unit manager" - which meant i paid the bills for all the stuff they bought for the sets - like the coffee, curtains, the Post Office sign etc. (fancy huh?). since there was no room on the set for me to sit, they plopped me in the News Dept, 3 doors down from Walter himself

one day he introduced himself, said i was sitting in his old editors office and he took me on a tour of the newsroom - he knew as much about the production stuff as he did about journalism. i was impressed. one day soon after he bought me a burger at the cafeteria and always remembered my name. class act

Exactly as I thought Walter would be. Dcap, thanks for sharing your experience as his friend. Your story will always be in my mind when I think of him.

Wow D-Cap, what a great story.
Thanks for telling it here.
Like my BigSis said, I'll add your story to my mind's Walter Cronkite file.

it's so nice when a celeb turns out to be the nice person you always imagined him to be. thanks for that, dcAp.

Loved the old "You Are There" program--and Walter always WAS there, looking us in the eye and telling the truth, for decades. I miss him yet.
